WHEN EAST MEETS WEST opens call for the WEMW Co-production Forum and First Cut Lab

After a successful season at major festivals for several films previously presented at WEMW (to mention a few, Chris the Swiss by Anja Kofmel at Semaine de la Critique Cannes, History of Love by Sonja Prosenc at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Her Job by Nicos Labot at Toronto International Film Festival), When East Meets West is happy to launch the call for entries for the upcoming edition, taking place in Trieste next January 20-22, 2019. WEMW will have a new East & West focus, bringing together over 450 film professionals from all over Europe and, in particular, from the 2019 spotlight territories: Central Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Poland Slovakia, Ukraine) and Benelux (Belgium, Luxemburg and The Netherlands). Starting from today producers from all over Europe and North/Latin America can submit their project in development for the ‘WEMW Co-production Forum’ and their fiction films in editing phase for the workshop ‘First Cut Lab’.

DEADLINE: October 31, 2018
Producers from Europe and North/Latin America are eligible to apply and WEMW will select 20 projects in development with international co-production potential, preferably either with Central Eastern Europe, Benelux or Italy. Projects can be long feature fiction films or documentaries, with preferably 15% of the total budget already in place (more info on the eligible criteria on www.wemw.it).
All selected projects will compete for the following awards:
Film Center Serbia Development Award – cash prize
EAVE scholarship – for the EAVE European Producers Workshop
Flow Postproduction Award – 15.000 EUR prize in post-production facilities
EWA Network Best Woman Director Award – cash prize for the best female director
Producers Network Prize – free accreditation to the Cannes Marche du Film Producer’s Network
Asterisk Visual Marketing Award – complete package including the prelaunch poster and dossier design,as well as content and text curation provided by Heretic Asterisk
Bratislava Film Residence Award – A 7-week residency with the guidance of international mentors

FIRST CUT LAB
DEADLINE: December 6, 2018
FCL is a programme designed for 3 long feature fiction films in editing phase from Eastern Europe and Italy.
Selected producer/director teams will receive tailor-made advice from a consulting editor and expert feedback from top international film professionals (creative producers, festival programmers, sales agents, etc). The main goal is to foster the artistic potential of selected rough cuts and, at the same time, increase the sales, festival and circulation potential of completed films. All applications must include video material (selected scenes, first assembly or rough cut) not less than 60 minutes long.
Along with the ‘WEMW Co-production Forum’ and ‘First Cut Lab’, the 2019 edition of WEMW will include the documentary fine cut section Last Stop Trieste, the EAVE session and the work in progress section for films coproduced with Italy This is IT. Furthermore, thanks to the precious cooperation and support of the Film Institutes from the spotlight territories, WEMW will bring together a large delegation of film professionals from Central Eastern Europe and Benelux and will present a series of panels and case studies dedicated to the co-production and distribution opportunities with the 2019 spotlight territories.
