Piermario Ciani described himself as “a producer of images and a creator of situations”, and was an impossible artist to label: a photographer, graphics artist, postal artist, and author of countless stunts which permeated mass media and mocked the world of traditional information, a creator of multiple identities and parallel worlds and a pioneer in language, fashion and trends. Living in a small, unknown, provincial town and through the use of mail and telephone, towards the end of the 1970s Piermario would become for over 30 years the organizer of an international network of artists and underground activists, a forger of connections, and the author of a new pop culture movement closely tied to mass media, stemming from Situationism and Fluxus as well as being the precursor to an idea of art and of collective participation that many years later would explode with the advent of the Internet. Comunicazioni impreviste (Unexpected communications) recovers testimonies, interviews, archive material, rearranging them to give birth to a cinematic performance.
