Who in Trieste doesn’t know Angelo Cecchelin? Rome had Petrolini, we had Cecchelin. He was a very popular comedian, brilliant and tireless inventor of hilarious jokes, which immediately became part of the common lexicon. Cecchelin for years meant full theaters. His comedy bit, affected those in power, inflamed the crowds. An irreverent anti-fascist during the 1920s (and he paid for his positions more than once with fines and prison) he did not hold back from making fun of the “reds” and the Yugoslavs in the “40 days” and so on. Caustic, cynical, popular in his way of always mocking the power of whatever faction it was. But it was precisely this continuous clash with established power that always made his name written down in someone’s black book. There were countless opportunities and excuses to punish him. Not just vilification, but accusations of collaboration, of espionage… Gray areas, where no one has yet attempted to shed light.
