One hundred years after his birth, forty years after the law with his name, we verify how alive is the mindset of Franco Basaglia, which has revolutionized the treatment of mental illnesses: the sick is no longer a subject to be relegated to asylums, but a “person” to be treated. Until then, the therapies involved physical restraint and electroshock. It was Basaglia to eliminate them and open the closed gates of the wards. We will follow what his students continue to do today in Italy and abroad.
