On the night between 11th and 12th September 1919, some legionnaires led by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio leave from Ronchi, trying to conquer Rijeka. Even though this military operation was patriotic and nationalist, it revealed a new spirit. The political and social foundations of the Regency (a community which despised the moral and social rules of the time) were influenced by the new ideas coming from the Avant-garde. Because of the experimentation of an alternative model (progressive and anarchic), full of cosmopolitan appeal, the “Impresa di Fiume” is seen as a foreword to hippy communities of the 1960s. Rijeka is the “City of Life”, a little experimental counter-society, whose ideas and values disagree with common ethics. D’Annunzio’s Rijeka belongs to our world because of its melodramatic and poetic style, with the mass becoming a tool for the poet’s rhetorical skills. The power of rituals and symbols, the politics of mass manipulation will be widely used by Mussolini, who would later shape the Ideology of Fascism.
