The documentary “Il Trieste” tells the story of the famous bathyscaphe that reached the deepest point in the depths of the Pacific Ocean (The Mariannes Trench – 10916 meters) in 1960 and went down in history as one of the greatest explorations of our planet. This documentary retraces the story of its construction and the following enterprises, a technical and scientific adventure that was made possible by the meeting of three extraordinary persons: the Swiss physician and explorer August Piccard, the first man that reached the stratosphere in 1932, his son Jaques, an engineer and oceanographer and the eclectic scholar from Trieste Diego de Henriquez.
The last one was the founder of the “War Museum for Peace” and thanks to him this innovative and futuristic submarine was made in the dockyard (Cantieri Riuniti dell’Adriatico) of Trieste, from which comes its name.
The documentary will include interviews and original historical documents, but also fiction scenes in order to plunge the audience into the fascinating tale, where the technical difficulties of such an enterprise intertwine with the life-story of the main characters, fitting into the perspective of the complex historical period.
