Journey to Shanghai tells the journey of thousands of Jewish refugees from Central and Eastern Europe to escape Nazi persecution. Between 1938 and 1940, after a long train journey with the risk of being arrested and sent back, or even worse, in concentration camps, thousands of men, women and children embarked on the luxury liners of the Lloyd Triestino. Destination: Shanghai, the only city in the world still willing to welcome them. Nearly 20,000 people undertook this long journey, embarking from Trieste and Genoa. It was for them the last hope of survival. Behind them, they left their homes, families and friends. Taking with them just few things, no money. A journey that would last a month, and would touch ports and cities so far not even imagined. And in the background, Shanghai, an international city, becoming, during the WW2, a city occupied by Japan and with its future deeply at risk.
