Cave del Predil, a town in the Italian Alps, near the border with Slovenia and Austria. Around 2010. A group of four teenagers from various backgrounds is escorted by Agata (55), a strict therapist, into the depths of the longabandoned mine for a speleotherapy session.
The group is made up of Adam (17), Agata’s unloved son; Eric (17), Adam’s childhood friend and foster brother ever since his mother, Petra, disappeared without a trace; Igor (17), a hefty Slovenian boy who is forced to participate because of a judicial order; Rebecca (17), a shy young woman from Udine with difficulty socializing. Eric, Igor, and Rebecca suffer from asthma and respiratory problems. During the session, a strong earthquake traps Agata and the kids deep in the mine, leaving them with no hope of outside rescue.
But Agata, whose family worked in these tunnels for generations, knows that in the depths of the mine there’s another exit and sets off as the head of the group to lead them all to safety.
As time passes, the kids’ minds are consumed by the shadows, silence, and dangers hidden in the endless labyrinth.
Their consciousness is ravaged by disturbing visions which seem to be a product of the mine’s sinister will.
It’s these visions that ultimately reveal not only that Agata is responsible for the tragedy which Eric experienced years before and for his mother’s disappearance, but also for having always hidden the truth from her son.
From guide and point of reference, Agata transforms into the unintentional spokesperson for a generation that never listened to its children, that ignored or hid the truth, and, in so doing, led them to a world in which they have no hope of salvation; a world with no way out, just like the mine. Agata must own up to her guilt before this group of teenagers who are finally aware of the lies that have oppressed them.
