“Misericordia” tells a grim reality, marked by poverty, illiteracy and provincialism, it explores the hell of an unbearable decrepitude ignored by society. This film evokes the fragility of women, the violence that continues to be exerted against them, their desperate and boundless loneliness. Three women live in an old hut in a former fishing village made up of small houses with dry stone walls, stuck together; behind the dwellings, a majestic mountain rises among the rubbish and waste of all kinds. Arturo lives with them, he is eighteen years old, but there is something indefinable that makes him an ageless creature. Sometimes he looks like a child, other times as a very old man. He moves lopsided, his gaze is distant, sometimes delusional. He was born defective, Arturo, from the kicks and punches that his mother received before she died. They used to call her murderer Polyphemus, a medium height man, graying hair, a marked face, an expression made ambiguous by the fact that one of the two eyes is blind. Nuccia, Betta and then Anna take care of Arturo and love him as if he were their own son.
