Trieste, Italy, August 23. In the city centre, by the sea, a vast square. It is called “Piazza Unità” (Unity Square). It’s so big and majestic but it looks desert. In the middle of the square – a stone fountain. Like a lonesome, dry tree. There are 5 bars and 3 restaurants in the square. All have patios. All patios are empty. The sun is high, the heat is unbearable. No people, except for the sweaty waiters, scattered in the shades. The entire film takes place in this Square between 12.30pm (when the stores are closing for the lunch break) and 3.30pm (when the stores are opening again). In five different genres, in five languages, five love stories are told, united in the Square of Unity. Different stories: melancholic and funny stories of tragic love, infinite love, romantic love, passion love, hopeless love.
