As in every human field, the scientific world has its own customs and habits. There are, however, some minds that do not subscribe to the status quo, but rather strive for its improvement. They reward openness over secrecy and access over exclusion and are creating a future where science can contribute to making our lives better. These are the revolutionary minds.
Ilaria Capua is an Italian vet who runs a virology laboratory under the national health service. For Scientific American, she is one of the 50 most important scientists in the world. Seed magazine has named her a “Revolutionary Mind. When In 2006 a pathogenic avian virus arrived from Nigeria, after discovering its genetic code, Ilaria refused to deposit the genetic sequence of the virus genome in a databank accessible to only 15 other laboratories, and instead published it in Gene Bank, an open access database. Over 1000 laboratories worldwide downloaded it in a week, receiving that valuable data they were able to form a coalition to fight the spread of the virus.
Ilaria Capua changed the rules of the scientific game and won!
