In 1911 Edoardo – Edvard Rusjan, from Gorizia, crashed with his airplane during an exhibition in Belgrade: he had projected and built that airplane himself, together with his brother Giuseppe – Josip, in the workshop of Mihajlo Mercep, an entrepreneur from Zagreb. Edvard Rusjan was the first victim of Austro-Hungarian aviation. After his brothers’ death, Josip remained in Zagreb, in order to complete a second airplane (projected together with Edvard), but in 1912 he interrupted his work and emigrate to Argentina. In the new Yugoslavia, established just a couple of years after his death, Edvard Rusjan immediately became a national hero, with a monument being erected in his honour in Nova Gorica. Nowadays, despite the breakup of Yugoslavia, the myth of Edvard Rusjan is still vivid among Slovenian aviators. However, only in the past few years have the stories of the Rusjan brothers and their feats come back to Gorizia: now, the house of their family displays a memorial stone.
In occasion of the centenary of their first flight in 2009, this film wants to be a tribute to the Friulian-Slovenian Wright Brothers, who defied the world with their reckless dream.
