Turin 1970, not far from Lingotto. Giorgio is thirteen. Before he falls asleep he hears the Lord telling him to leave his home, to go far away and look for his happiness. One day he meets some hippies who have just come back from a peaceful country where people are pure and live in poverty. The boy understands that that is the place where he has to go. This is the beginning of Giorgio Saccheggiani’s odyssey: he is thirteen and penniless, and crosses two continents following a circus first, on the vans together with the hippies later. Meanwhile in Turin Francesca, Giorgio’s mother, starts her painful and silent search for her son, who seemed to have disappeared into thin air. Her sense of guilt will lead her to slowly disown her son, to pretend with her neighbours and the rest of the world that she has never had a son named Giorgio. Thirty years later the two of them meet up again for the first time. In India. Giorgio has become a Hindu priest, he looks after the temple in a small, dusty village that is stunned by the passage of trucks and besieged by monkeys. The two of them spend three months together, living in the temple, sleeping in each other’s arms, eating curry and rice. The documentary tells the story of a separation and a reunion over the course of thirty years. The writer Niccolò Ammaniti at his first experience as director.
