My father Albano is 64 years old and has been married to my mother Milena for almost forty years. He was born and raised in the mountains of Carnia. Between 1987 and 1988 he worked as a mechanic in the former U.R.S.S.. Thanks to that job he was able to buy the house of his life. It was his dream after the earthquake forced him to live in a prefab for decades. I found the letters that my parents exchanged during the months in Russia and from which emerges the feeling of love that is the basis of the polyphonic and multi-temporal narrative of the film. My father’s letters accompany family photographs and period images taken in Russia; the archives of the earthquake in Friuli highlight the meaning of the house for a traumatized community. The trip with my dad to Russia thirty years later opens a glimpse into our relationship; finally in Carnia my gaze focuses on him, on the house, on the land from which I left to fulfil myself and to which my father instead returned to give life to his dream. There is only one letter from Mamma Milena in which she mentions an audio cassette – now lost – on which she recorded a message with me as a child.
