How many stories in a country where three wars have passed? From Cold War to Facebook. A documentary about the human implications of the militarization. A reconstruction of our collective memory through a mosaic of stories. What about the stories of individuals, of those who lived and worked with, for and inside the barracks?
The Friuli Venezia Giulia is a land rich in history, invasions and battles: has mountains, hills, plains and sea with two large borders, one north and one at East. After the Second World War, in consequence of the Cold War, the region was completely militarized. To defend the borders is deployed more than 50% of the Italian Army. In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, the geopolitical situation changes in a few years, Italy chooses to abolish conscription and in 2004 fell the east the boundaries with the Republic of Slovenia – independent in 1991.
The Army demobilizes, about 400 sites are abandoned, 102 square kilometers of land, the landscape changed: it’s a case unique in the world for size, type and history. Pasolini wrote of this land as a country of thunderstorms and primroses: Today you could say “A country of primroses and barracks.”
Portraits of a large amount of stories, places, characters and professions, that the abandonment of the sites is bringing with him.
